Just moved into a house built in the 30's that has a concrete goldfish pond with brick walls. I like the idea of having a goldfish pond, but it is extremely gross and I would guess that it hasn't been used in 20 years or more. It simply collects rain water and looks like it holds sludge most of the time.

If there was some neat, fairly easy way to get it back in good shape, I might try fish once it warms back up. Otherwise, I may fill it with soil and use it as some sort of garden.

Suggestions, Ideas, etc......

I'd say it would be well worth the initial headaches to have a water feature in your yard. I suggest simply keeping it full (despite the fact that it won't look good) until spring. When it's warm, clean it properly, and make it into a water garden. Whether you have fish is up to you - personally, I could do without those, but that's just my preference. There are tons of gorgeous water plants that will really make your yard something special with a little work. Enjoy!

If its interior is really knocked around get a new butyl liner for it.

The trick to good ponds is a really good filtration system and correct amount of fish and water plants to discourage algae. I'd renovate it and enjoy, perhaps even add a small fountain. Get some advice from experts people in this industry seem to be very helpful.

I think you should send it to my house.(Just kidding) I would make it into a mountain babbling brook. You could get some imitation boulders,if you don't have a source for real ones.Than get a garden pump, and some vinyl hose, You could put water plants and some other things you like around it. I saw a demo at "Armstrong nursery",and I wished I had that in my yard. It was real pretty with the water cascading down over the boulders.

clean out the rainwater and the sludge (bail it out if you have to)
re-fill with clean water, add some water plants, maybe a fountain, a few goldfish and you have a beautiful focal point in your garden
get a book about pondkeeping at your local garden shop - it's not dufficult to do or to maintain

Ponds are the best, in my opinion, so don’t fill it in! they are work, but well worth it.

The ponds they have available are those plastic tub insert types or digging the hole and putting in a thick plastic/rubber liner. If you already have the concrete, try uglassit.com for the best product on the market. algae doesn’t stick to it, so its less cleaning. Contact them and ask if its ok to use for a fish pond, for i know they are used in pools.

Doesn’t hurt to ask, thats for sure. link below:

Just my opinion,
:)

How about a Japanese rock garden with a bamboo bridge crossing over it. Assuming the pond is large enough....
