Try using 7-Up/Sprite or any other softdrink that contains citric acid. The sugar and citric acid mixed with equal parts of water and adding a drop of chlorine (prevents scum from forming in the water) will help keep your tree lasting much longer. Make sure the water in the reservoir remains filled with the solution the entire time you have the tree in your home. Lemonade (pulp-free) can also be substituted for 7-Up/Sprite.

NOTE: If you really want to extend the life of your tree, I'd strongly recommend using a product called "Cloud Cover". It is an anti-transpirant designed to cut down moisture loss through the leaves/needles of trees as well as protecting plants/trees in your yard from frost damage.

I've sprayed "Cloud Cover" on my Christmas trees and it's kept the Christmas tree green and fresh looking until New Years. You can find "Cloud Cover" at some of your hardware stores or by purchasing it online. I found it at Home Depot today and the rate is 1part Cloud Cover to 10 parts water.

It really is amazing stuff!

Hope this information was of some help to you. GOOD LUCK!

Have the guy at the tree place cut a straight 1-inch off the trunk (or do it yourself) and put it in water as soon as you get home. You should always make sure there is water in the tree stand. Some people say to put aspirin or 7-Up in the water, but it doesn't do a thing (heard that on the TODAY Show this morning). Always, always, always make sure you keep it watered.

Well there will be many answers to this & none with any proof as it all comes down to when the tree was cut & the tempeture at which it was in afterwards. Rather then add things to the water, which may at best add another day or so of low needle loss why not cut your own? It makes a good family outting & can be a very strong bonding/tradition for you and people you celbrate the holidays with. Cut your own tree places are becoming harder & harder to find these day so you will prolly have to drive some distance, but if you stop & eat and see some sites along the way, it is more a x-mas outting then a chore. If you cut your own in will last 3 months easy with no needle loss (much more time then you want it for anyway) which makes clean up a snap cuz there is none.... Merry Christmas

My former spouse is a floral designer, She has used 7-UP or Sprite in fresh flower arrangements for the seventeen years Ive known her. The flower shops used it on the live decorated trees that they sold for Christmas. So the people that advised you to use this are absolutely right. Don't waste your money on expensive items that are basically the same thing as the soft drinks that have been mentioned. Merry Christmas.

i used to use a product called Prolong(no jokes hehe)....I cut a hemlock fresh on my property......put this stuff in the water and misted the tree...it lasted into FEBRUARY...and i was amazed to see little green tips goring on the needles...after a few weeks...
this year..i gathered some broken off white pine limbs...i tried Sprite...the limbs drank a little bit in two days.. without sprite.i then added a half bottle of Sprite to maybe a gallon of h2o...that tree guzzled 3/4 of the water in the next two days...this is just h2o and sprite..havnt added bleach yet....ill see how long this works(i mist tree at least 1x per day)...JK

You can buy something to put in the water, not sure what it's called though. Lowe's Home Depot, Walmart and other stores should have it, just ask. I've used it before, but no longer use live trees and forgot the name

once you trim the bottom of the tree you are supposed to slather syrup on the tree itself so that it stays moist.

Many retailers sell supplements for this. Also, I've heard that Aspirin can be used.
