It depends on if they are real wood or fake wood. Fake wood, you cannot refinish them, you will have to paint them. In that case you will have to sand and clean with a product called No Sand, then prime and paint with a oil based paint, usually semi gloss, sand lightly, then a second coat. Sand lightly, a third coat. Then stand back and see what you have. If necessary, lightly sand and a fourth coat. You have to let it try 24 hours between coats, so you will have to have the space to paint your doors and drawers. After going to this much work, you will probably want new hinges and handles, so you need to think of this also when deciding to paint or buy new. If you can re-stain, you will have to strip the old stain and varnish off, sand and re-stain, then varnish or polyurethane. You will still need the room for laying out your doors and drawers. So i guess it depends on how much time and room you have compared to going to Lowe's or Home Depot and pricing new cabinets.

You can sand the existing finish off and restain and finish then with laquer or polyurathane

you can take the hard route - sand and restain them then polyurethane, or easier - you can paint them.
