Try cleaning your refrigerator once every two weeks. Throw out any food that has dried out, gone mushy or is growing mold. Wipe down the inside with a mild bleach solution and dry thoroughly. Wipe down the shelves, also. Put paper towels under and in the vegetable crisper and in the dairy/meat drawer. Put a open box of baking soda on the top shelf in the back.

Wash out with detergent and rinse with fresh water including a half teaspoon of vanilla essence. Remove off food and package fresh food that tends to smell in sealed containers. Place a coffee jar lid filled with baking soda at the back where it will not get spilt. Another absorbent which will work but will be harder to find and possibly a lot messier if spilt is charcoal.

Get rid of old or spoiled food. Be sure to store food in tightly sealed storage containers (the cheap ones from Reynolds or Glad work fine. Put an open box of baking soda in fridge to absorb odor-change as directed on box.
If it already smells I would empty and clean it well first.
