We have a community garden that suffers from weeds annually (regardless of how much weeding takes place) and is situated in an area where clay type soil is the norm. We are looking for ways to enrich the soil while eliminating weeds as much as possible.

My husband and I just purchased a home which needs some brightening up. The house feels sort of "frumpy." It has natural hardwood floors, wood trim and the french doors are also the same wood. The kitchen has been updated to a more modern look already. I fear losing some sort of character or even value if we paint the trim but it is so dark. There isn't tons of natural light durring the day and I want to make the house more cheery. The walls will all be neutral colors blending from room to room so nothing too drastic. Mostly taupe / tans and off white. I would like to paint the trim a bright white or some shade of white. Do I dare?

It seems that everywhere we live there's mildew. We try to combat it, but eventually it always wins. We try to move away from the problem (since we rent anyway). Here's what I want to know... What sorts of things have people used to clean mildew away FOR GOOD? Are any of them natural? I've heard Bleach works well, but I can't breathe around bleach (bad lungs). We're currently trying Vinegar... the instructions we read say to spray it on and not wipe it away... Do we wash it away frist then follow the instructions? Do we wipe it away after a day? I don't really get those instructions. How DO we move away from Mildew?
What should we look for in a home to know that it should be mildew free? Also, it happens everywhere in the apt. we're in, but mostly around the windows, which are always full of condensation.
Lastly, do I have any grounds to "stick it" to my landlord over this? Landlords never seem to help with this issue... WHY? It's THEIR building afterall.
Thanks for the help!

I am in Phoenix Arizona. How should I water my Brazillian Pepper tree? What should I do to help it grow and keep it healthy? Right now the tree is only half full of leaves. I've had it for 2 years and its never really grown much. Its definately not dead, just haven't really done much for it. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a rather-expensive wallpaper medallion (made by York) to put up on the ceiling of my daughter's room. The idea was to cover over a dull area where the ceiling had to be retouched after a smaller-base-diameter fan was installed. The mediallion is 36" in diameter and the ceiling fan (including the blades) is 52". I can cut the ornate wallpaper smaller if that would actually look better. It would be time-consuming but still look good, I think. Is there a rule of thumb for the diameter of the medallion to the width of a ceiling fan?

I am wanting to lay ceramic or porcelin tile on my concrete floor. Should I put some type of vinyl sheet down inbetween the tile and floor. Someone told me that if the concrete moves this will prevent the tiles from breaking. Is this true. I haven't seen anything like this at the DIY stores.
