My dad wired it to the on/off switch..but I dont think that would work

It would depend upon the type of hour meter.
If it is a 120VAC 60Hz meter you wire it between the live and neutral lines at the AC output.
For a 240VAC 60Hz meter, it gets wired between the two live lines at the AC output.
If you have a 12VDC meter, it would wire between the positive and negative leads of the 12V output.
There are battery powered hour meters which connect inductively to the spark plug wire.

I bought a digital hour meter for my lawn tractor. It cost about $20 and so far it has lasted 8 plus years. The only wiring required is one thin wire wrapped around a sparkplug wire. I am sure that there are other units that are as easy to install and last many many years.

one wire to the ground of course the second to the neutral wire coming off the power output, then one wire off the hot...also off the power output
