they do NOT grow on a tree. They are members of ther bromeliad family, which includes epiphtytes (tree-dwelling) and terrestrial (ground-dwelling) species.

Pineapple Annas comosus is a ground-dwelling bromeliad that is grown commercially in Hawaii and other tropical locations. It is native to South America.

How Do Pineapples Grow

Pineapples like lots of sun and grow well in tropical regions around the world. In addition to Hawaii, pineapple for the fresh market is grown in Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador and Nicaragua.

The pineapple is technically not a single fruit, but a sorosis. The fruits of a hundred or more separate flowers grow on the plant spike. As they grow, they swell with juice and pulp, expanding to become the "fruit." Pineapples do not grow on trees, as many erroneously think. They are the fruit of a bromeliad, rising from the center on a single spike surrounded by sword-like leaves. The pineapple plant is the only bromeliad to produce edible fruit. Commercial plants are only harvested two to three years since the fruit begins to get smaller with each year of plant life. Pineapples weigh between four and nine pounds on average but can reach weights up to twenty pounds. The waste parts left from canning plants, including the skin, core and ends, are used to make alcohol, vinegar and food for livestock

I have one growing at my place in Sydney,Australia.About 3 years ago at Christmas,we Had a pineapple and I put the top half with the leaves into the ground. It is still there and it seems to be fine as it is hard to pull out so must have roots growing.I don't know how long it will take to grow into a full pineapple. My mum read you could do this with them in a magazine.

Pineapples do grow on the ground not on a tree.
You may have become confused as there is actually a plant called the pineapple tree. This is actually a PALM and does not grow the pineapple fruit. It is simply given this name as the top of the palm looks similar to the top of a pineapple plant.
cheers

Agree with MG except that the Dole company is actually pulling out of Hawaii as land value is growing too high and moving most of their operations to the Philippines (same climate).

They grow in the ground (you are yanking our chain, right?) on Dole Island, better known as Hawaii. When you go there you can ride the pineapple railroad.

MG is right, and if you are interested, read the book Hawaii, it goes in to developing / experimenting with the many different varieties - quite interesting.
