I would say that if space was a factor then a washer/dryer.
If you are single, or only 2 of you at home then a washer dryer is good. But...
If like me you are a working mother that needs to do a lot of washing (I am a chef as well) then I would strongly advise a separate washer and dryer.

Well if you need the space, a washer/dryer. You have got to consider the cost of buying and the cost to run one or two machines. What if the washing machine broke then you couldn't use the dryer? If you have the space I would get a cheap dryer. Plus think of the time wasted waiting for the dryer when you want to use the washing machine.

A survey published today states that the most likely appliance to break down is a washer/dryer. We have separate appliances and the dryer is 7 years old and still functions great. Washer was replaced last year but we had had it for about 7 years before it broke down.

Separate definitely.
Tumble driers tend to last longer than washers.
One can be washing whilst other is drying.
Drum size in separate dryers is much larger - get T-shirts out and fold whilst still hot and they don't need ironing.
Separate dryers are much more efficient.

Washer/dryers are less economical because they take much longer to dry clothes than a tumble dryer. They are convenient and space-saving but as dryers, they're not brilliant. I like them, I used to have one. Wish I still did sometimes. Don't get me wrong though, its not something I lose sleep over.

If you have the space, separate. Whenever our washer/dryer breaks down, the engineer explains that you can't get get the same reliability out of a combined machine - compromises have to be made, and it's usually with the dryer.
If you do need to save space, it may be worth spending more for a reliable make that is less likely to cut corners. I am totally fed up with Zanussi and Hotpoint and seriously thinking of spending more for a Bosch, AEG or Miele next time. Unless we move to a bigger place.

Separates are really the best. Each appliance can be used singly or both together. The capacity of the drier is not the same as the washer, you therefore have to remove some of the washed clothes and dry them at a later time, which is not always convenient.

I have a washer dryer now because of limited space. I only use the dryer to fluff up towels or if I am in a hurry for the garment.

i would say seperate
on the sencible veiw that is
a washer/dryer is great space saving but....
what is your washer went wrong and only the dryer worked or vice vercer
at least if seperate if one goes wrong it can be fixed
on the other hand if the washer/dryer went wrong it can be fixed but in the mean time your left with out either
at least seperates if one goes wrong you can still use the other
