I bought a rather-expensive wallpaper medallion (made by York) to put up on the ceiling of my daughter's room. The idea was to cover over a dull area where the ceiling had to be retouched after a smaller-base-diameter fan was installed. The mediallion is 36" in diameter and the ceiling fan (including the blades) is 52". I can cut the ornate wallpaper smaller if that would actually look better. It would be time-consuming but still look good, I think. Is there a rule of thumb for the diameter of the medallion to the width of a ceiling fan?

The diameter of the fan's base plate is 6".

Sorry but I have reread pinkdenia's answer a few time now and I don't get it. The medallion, of course, is bigger than the base plate. The paper medalion was bought to cover up the flat finish around the circumference of the new and smaller plate. Perhaps this answer could be restated for me.

Just so long as the width of the fan, including the blades, is not the same as the medallion, it should look fine.

No, not to the width of the entire ceiling fan (blades included). Just make sure the medallion is bigger than the base of the fan (the part on the ceiling).

Here's a fun story... When I was still in high school (so liiiike... 5 years ago? I forget what grade I was in) my dad was offered the chance to go get his Master's at McGill in Montreal. So he did, and he lived there during the week and came home on weekends OR we'd go there and stay in the [amazing] condo he was renting from a friend who was stationed overseas. Since it was a condo it only had the one bedroom so we bought a big air mattress/inflatable bed to set up in the living room area so my brother or I could sleep on that and the other on the couch. The ceiling fans in this place were essentially one big curved stainless steel (or something that looked like it) blade. So when they spun, since there was only one blade that was long on one side and then after the part where it attached to the ceiling there was just a short little bit on the other side, it looked like it was spinning all lopsided and I'd have to lie underneath it while falling asleep. One time when we were there I had a nightmare about a helicopter and the propeller came loose from the top of it and it was flying at me about to cut my head off and I woke up freaking out and then all I see is this giant fan blade circling above me. Terrified me and from then on I made my brother let me sleep on the couch.
