Vegetarian & Vegan - December 2007

I recently started a vegetarian diet and have recently learned that a favorite yogurt - Dannon Light 'N Fit - in my daily diet is made with "kosher gelatin" - eek! So, I'm looking for a low-calorie and/or low-sugar yogurt made without gelatin. I still consume by-products and am not yet seriously looking to do the vegan thing. I don't want any animal products sneaking in!

So, if you have any knowledge of yogurt that you would like to share - please do!

Would I still be a vegetarian if I was lacto-ovo-vegetarian? I may not be a TRUE vegetarian but can I still call myself one. Oh yeah, by the way, I want to be a lacto-ovo-vegetarian because I'm trying to take it slowly.

...by buying vegetarian bacon/sausage or the like - it's a puzzle to me, why not have your vegetarian meat substitutes in the shape of an apple or a banana?

I just want peoples responces to the question, because I find it interesting how people react, yet alone act in real-life.
I have been a vegan for 2 years, my 3 friends recently became vegan.
I have never judged anyone on how they eat or urged them to be vegan like me.
And I have never seen my friends do that EVER. Infact I would
find it unbelievable if they did.
But it seems hat if I tell anyone I am vegan they go off on me and attack me saying that I will be 'weak' and die?
Now please people, why say stuff when you have no dea whether it is true or not?
Vegans can be very healthy once they balance their diet just like anybody. Everybody has to balance their diet some way or another.
I have gotten to the point where I avoid telling people I am vegan, like when I am in-line for lunch, people ask why I don't get any meat. WEll I say "I don't eat it" I try to avoid say that WORD.
I am not saying all meat-eaters are like this, but why are some?
I haven't ever seen vegans judge.

Since there are protien sources in the vegetable world, why bother with nasty tasting, nasty textured fake meat? It ranks up there with 'nearbeer' and decaf coffee. whats the point? I am not trying to be snotty, I have always wondered.

I have read the ingredients of regular marble cheese and found that it has not listed rennet. Does this mean that the cheese does not contain rennet, or that it is not required for the rennet to be listed?
Also, I have heard that feta cheese does not contain rennet. Is this true?

I organised a lunch for my workplace, and I had a confirmed Vegan and a confirmed Vegetarian who told me she's "trying to be Vegan" - so I asked the restaurant for two VEGAN meals and they said they would comply. However, the restaurant made them risotto with vegetables but added parmesan cheese throughout the rice. I was annoyed because I thought Vegans could not eat cheese of any sort and thought the restaurant should have known this, or at least checked first.

The funny thing was, the Vegan man ate it all up and didn't mind at all (and he's usually REALLY strict with food), but the Vegetarian who DOES usually eat eggs and cheese, but decided two days beforehand she was going to become Vegan made a huge fuss and song and dance until the restaurant cooked her another meal.

So, I am confused - can you describe a Vegan's diet to me and is it correct that they do not eat any animal product? Thanks!

If not, are you familiar with any good sites that have a good recipes or a nice manageable starters diet? Oh, please be aware that when I say "say starters diet" I mean that it would actually give you vegan meals you could/should eat/try out for the first week of so. I hope I made that clear.

Thanks so Much,

A New Vegan

I'm becoming a vegetarain and I will be excluding these 5 things:

1. Dairy(including eggs)

2.poultry

3.nut/peanuts

4.fish

5.meat

I will be buying some soy and organic products as soon as possible. I was wondering are there any othe vegans out their who may be on the same or similar diet and have some tasty receipes you would reccomend me trying. Also, I may have to take pills as will in order to get some things my body will be missing.
(Ex: zinc,calcium,vitiamin D...ect)
I'm not sure if all pills for vegans do the same thing and/or have the same outcome, so, if you are taking any pills are there any you reccomend me taking that work well for you(and I will be asking my doctor about the pills just to make sure they will give my body what it needs just like yours).

Thanks so much,

A New Vegan
