If not, are you familiar with any good sites that have a good recipes or a nice manageable starters diet? Oh, please be aware that when I say "say starters diet" I mean that it would actually give you vegan meals you could/should eat/try out for the first week of so. I hope I made that clear.

Thanks so Much,

A New Vegan

I'm not sure what would constitute a "starters diet" or why you would think that vegans in their first week would need to eat something special. I was vegetarian first, but when I went vegan I just jumped right in and ate foods that sounded good to me. A couple of good cookbooks are in order. "Vegan with a Vengeance" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz is, hands down, my favorite cookbook ever. And she has a lot of good recipes on her website, www.theppk.com. Since you're just starting out, now is as good a time as any to bone up on nutrition; "Becoming Vegan" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina is great.

Hi, congrats on going vegan. I'm not sure about "starter's diet" recipes, but here are some vegan recipe sites that I enjoy:

http://www.chooseveg.com/vegan-recipes.asp
http://www.cok.net/lit/recipes/
http://vegcooking.com/searchRecipes.asp

Two weeks' worth of vegan menus:
http://vegcooking.com/veganMenus-1.asp

Also, these are my favorite recipes:

Vegan chocolate chip cookies:
http://www.compassionatecooks.com/r/cookies.htm
("21/4cups unbleached all-purpose flour" should be 2 and 1/4 cups)

Vegan Pumpkin Pie Pancakes:

1 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 ¼ cups soy milk or other non-dairy milk
1/3 cup canned pumpkin
1 Tablespoon corn oil

1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pumpkin pie spice and set aside.

2. In a food processor or blender, combine the soy milk, canned pumpkin, and corn oil and process until well blended. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing with a few swift strokes until just combined. Use a skillet to make pancakes as you would with regular pancake batter.

Good luck!!

Check out www.vegweb.com for recipes and resources.

www.cok.net has a starter guide for newbie vegans such as you and they also have a tiny recipe booklet.

The book "Skinny *****" is a good pro-vegan book disguised as a diet book. In the back are basic meal plans and lists of packaged foods that are vegan. It's not comprehensive, as new products come on the market and companies change their formulations, but it's a great guideline.

Congratulations on your decision and good luck!

whats the best part of a meal? DESSERT! heres a recipe for a really good deep chocolate vegan cake thats pretty easy to make.

Chocolate Cake
1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup cold water or chilled brewed coffee
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
2 Tbs. cider vinegar
Chocolate-Peanut Butter Frosting
2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
1/4 cup peanut butter
3 to 4 Tbs. water
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375F. Generously oil 8-inch square or round baking pan. Dust with sifted cocoa, or line bottom of baking pan with parchment paper.
2. To make Chocolate Cake: Sift flour, cocoa, soda, salt and sugar. In another bowl, combine oil, water or coffee and vanilla. Pour liquid into dry, and mix until smooth.
3. Add vinegar and stir briefly; baking soda will begin to react with vinegar, leaving pale swirls in batter. Without wasting time, pour batter into prepared pan.
4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Serve cake from pan, or, when cool, transfer to plate.
5. To make Chocolate-Peanut Butter Frosting: In heavy saucepan, melt chocolate over medium heat. Beat together peanut butter, water and vanilla until smooth. Beat in confectioners’ sugar, and add melted chocolate, mixing until blended. Spread frosting on cooled cake.
