Why would a teacher choose to give students a specific set of activities to explore without allowing the students to explore their own questions and collect and interpret their own data?

I am a substitute teacher at a high school, I signed on to work for a full calendar year here so I am still trying to figure out how to relate to kids, what I should talk to them about. I feel like I need to make a connection with them so I can get through to them, so I gotta get them to like me in order to be a positive influence on their lives. They are mostly hispanic. I know that they don't like to talk about school, that's for sure. Sometimes it's hard to make a connection with them. I know I should find out what is interesting to them, but I don't think a lot of the stuff that they are interested in is worth a crap. Any veteran teachers or anybody else have any advice? Thanks so much.

lol, one of my friends told me that and I thought it was halarious.

I heard that teachers from my school district are not going to school tomorrow to protest because they don't get paid enough. I think it's just a lousy excuse to get the day off. I mean I know they deserve more, but will not teaching for one day help anything? I think it just disturbs the learning process. So tomorrow students will have to go to school, and the school will have to hire a bunch of substitutes...

They could've done this protest after school or sometime when they are not teaching, but no...

Some of my teachers are coming tomorrow because they say they're here for us, not the money.

Tomorrow will be a real test for teachers : If they don't come then they are here just for the money...or they care about their salary more then the students...

So now I'm thinking...

Do teachers teach for the money or because they really love kids and teaching?

I am currently a student intern at a local Kindergarten and I have a few children I'm not sure what to do with. They aren't really problem children... perhaps just wanting attention. Everytime they are asked to do something (put papers away for example) they will fall to the floor and cry which causes classroom disruption. We have gone at this from several different angles but nothing has worked. I do realize that school is new to these children and they might need to adjust. I was wondering if any experienced teachers might know where I could find some information (articles perhaps) on dealing with this type issue. Everything I've searched for deals more with behavioral problems like fighting. Any ideas, websites, or terminolgy I could search would be most helpful!!!

Thanks so much!

Creating an environment in which teachers are truly well-trained, qualified and fully motivated to teach and encourage children's natural intelligence would make the future a better and brighter place.
My question is: Do you think, as a teacher, that being paid lucratively would improve your classroom, your motivation and your students? And do you have any other thoughts on the subject?
Thank you.

my chem professor asked me to come and see him in his office after class. i knock and go in but he locks the door behind me. i thought that was a lil weird but i didnt say anything..he starts talking about my late assignment and tells me to strip down to my underwear for my punishment!!! i just stood there really shocked he said if i didnt do it then he was going to fail me. i had no choice so i did it. he put me over his lap and spanked me really hard 10 times. i had to count them and say "im a bad girl" all the time he was doing it. after he finished i got dressed and he said "you can go now" i keep thinking about it..was it wrong of him to do this to me?

Hi. I'm 17 and a senior. I am a guy and like working with kids. Ppre-K to kindergarten. I took Child development in High school for all four years. Even the teachers asked if i was going to become a teacher. Problem is my parents. A pre-K teacher doesn't make much. I come from a pretty wealthy family, compared to my life write now, i wouldn't make on a teachers salary. My mom suggested speech therapist. Does anyone know any other jobs thats invovled with teaching children and makes more then 50,00 a year.
Thanks for your help.
