I am certified to teach history and Spanish in both California and Utah. What you need to do, and it is best to do this at the beginning, like you are, is to check out the requirements for teaching a foreign language in both states and make sure that you fulfill both requirements at once. Each state board of education will have requirements listed on their web site and I suggest that you call each one to confirm your understanding of the requirements. Now is the time to make sure you fulfill the requirements in both states, it never hurts to be certified in both. Good for you!

You will most likely apply for and recieve initial certification in the state you where you are attending college. Some states have reciporacle certification agreements and will convery your certificate and some may have additional requirements. Your Education Deparment at you school may be able to help you sort out the requirements for the two states.

Here's a link:

http://www.uky.edu/Education/TEP/usacert.html

which, in turn, has links to state certification requirements.

I moved to New Mexico 13 years ago; I held a certificate from Massachusetts. Under the reciprocity agreement at that time I was certified pretty much everywhere but here! I had to apply for certification and turned out to have more endorsements (approved teaching areas) in New Mexico than I had in Massachusetts.

Good luck to you.

most state teaching certificates are transferable. so if you get a passing certificate in one state, you should be able to transfer it to another with no problem. you might have to do some additional professional development courses per that state, but you shouldn't need a separate certificate.
