I teach year 6 and have to talk to both the girls and boys about how "babies are made."
There are many reasons for sex ed:
1) Unfortunately many parents just can't face having the talk themselves, this means they either don't do it or they rush through leaving their children confused.
2) Girls in particular are starting their periods earlier, average is now 10 -11, this means these young girls are now biologically women and could have a child.
3) we have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the entire of Europe, there are literally thousands of girls who didn't believe they could get pregnant "standing up, or the first time or on a full moon!" Something has got to change, the government hoped by teaching everyone earlier there wouldn't be as many unplanned pregnancies. Even if you were a little embarrassed, its better you know then hopefully we will have less children having children!

It's to try and stop them getting pregnant by 12.

We might not like it but unfortunately something has to be done about all these kids with kids, diseases, etc and if that means teaching young children then so be it.

My daughters are aged 8 and 10 so i understand where your coming from, i had sex education younger than that and didn't have a child until i was 30.

1) They may have an older brother or sister who is talking about it all the time, or leaving all the time to do it.

2) They may share a bedroom (or be similarly familiar with) parent activities.

3) It *might* be better for them to learn about it before they are in the grips of hormones.
