Hi. I'm 17 and a senior. I am a guy and like working with kids. Ppre-K to kindergarten. I took Child development in High school for all four years. Even the teachers asked if i was going to become a teacher. Problem is my parents. A pre-K teacher doesn't make much. I come from a pretty wealthy family, compared to my life write now, i wouldn't make on a teachers salary. My mom suggested speech therapist. Does anyone know any other jobs thats invovled with teaching children and makes more then 50,00 a year.
Thanks for your help.

carrer... you meant career..
my life write now... you meant RIGHT now...

Please don't become a teacher until you know basic english. As for advice on what to do because you want to make your parents happy because they want you to make alot of money...

They SHOULD love you and be proud of you no matter what you chose as your career, especially something as nobel as a teacher, fireman, police officer, nurse, doctor etc. not one person has even been loved because of thier paycheck or lack of one, but rather who they are inside.

Also if you decide to take the career your parents want you to have and it does not coincide with the one that will make you happy then you will lose so much of the happiness in your life that by the time you figure it out you will be old and grey and it will be too late for you change.

Follow your heart, screw your parents and thier money.

I think it depends on what school system you worked at and the level of your education. I used to work for Fairfax Co. Public Schools in VA and after working 3 years with a MA in school counseling (I was a school counselor), I would be close to $50,000. You can definitely make more as an administrator (principal, assistant principal, etc...) which require you to be a teacher for a bit first. I don't think you have to be a teacher for years, but just a good amount and then get an administrators degree. Other than that, not sure about what jobs working with kids make that. My husband is a teacher and I am switching from school counselor to teacher b/c we love the kids and have good benefits and LOVE the summers off. Best of luck to you and don't give up teaching just yet, especially if it interests you. Speech therapists don't make much more than teachers and they only work with a select group of students. If you like kids, it's just so wonderful being with them every day. Again, best of luck!

Different school districts pay different salaries. Teachers in my school district make well over $100,000 a year when they are on maximum. Some teachers also find jobs outside of the school day or during the summer that provide additional income.

Frequently again depending upon the school district teachers receive very good pensions, free or reduced medical insurance, sick leave, sabbaticals and other benefits.

In my school district in terms of budgeting for a teacher we raised their salary by 30% to figure in the total budgetary cost.

Sometimes there are various types of bonuses that teachers receive when they begin teaching particularly in difficult to fill positions such as math.

You also might want to go into administration where guidance counselors. assitant principals and principals earn more money. Finally and most importantly you want to do what will make you happy. I was a teacher and school administrator for over 38 years. I was happy and proud of what I did. id di struggle financially in the earlier years but I lived through that without any problems. Now that I am retired I am in a much better financial position than many of my friends. If you want to be a teacher and have the calling go for it.

Good luck.

The teaching profession needs more men in early childhood settings. You would certainly be welcomed. But, your mom is right - speech therapists do make more than first year teachers. First year teachers where I live average about $39,000, but it goes up every year. You'd be at $50,000 in practically no time. Speech therapists, though, start at about $60,000, but it depends on the district. You could also work at a hospital as a therapist, but I have no idea what they would pay you. Speech therapists are also pretty much in demand right now. You wouldn't have much trouble finding a job. People with multiple subject teaching credentials tend to have a harder time finding a job because there are so many of us, but it depends on where you live. If you specialize in math or science, or special education, a job will be easier to find.

Teaching isnt about making money. If you are more concerned about your paycheck, pick another career.
