I am currently studying at university to become a teacher, and a group of friends and I recently had a debate as to how far we as teachers can go in promoting duscussions in class. the war in Iraq for example. is there any harm in asking a class of 14-18 y/o students to compare views on topics like the war, abortion, suicide, mental illness, cancer etc?

I used to think that Simple Future(will) describes an action that will happen in the future but we don't know when they'll happen. On the other hand, we tend to use be going to and Present Continuous when we wish to refer to a fixed arrangement; sth that is definitely going to happen at a specific time in the future because it is planned. However, today I got a little confused because of a sentence I saw in my coursebook: "I will visit my grandparents next month". Given the specific time in the future-next month-we know that we're talking about an arrangement. Then, why hasn't the book used Be Going To or Present Continuous?

I am tutoring a 17 yr old boy in English, and he asked me what authors or book he should read, to increase his reading and writing skills. The first thing that came to mind was The Great Gatsby because I read it when I was 17 and I loved the book. Do you this was good advice and can you recommend any other good books he should read?

I understand they're kids, it's just listening to how mean they are to each other and how negative they are about new things is really briging me down. Maybe it's becasue it's a low income school in a poorly run school district in Los Angeles, I just feel it's time for a change.

I was told that it was against Texas state law to give homework the night before the TAKS...Is this true? I looked on the Texas Education Agency website & couldn't find it.

I'm in the middle of a debate on the subject with my cousins throughout the state....some have homework, some don't. All of our kids are in elementary, ranging from 3rd to 5th grade.

I work two to three times more than teachers and teachers gets paid two to three times more than me. Teachers has no right to complain about their pay. shut up and babysit my kid.

This has become a sticking point in my classes. I want the students to work together in order to solve difficult problems, discuss altemative solutions, or to learn how to share the workload; however, it becomes increasingly apparent that one student does most or all of the work while the others goof off. Then, the rest copy and turn in the work as if they worked on it, too. I have tried to explain to all of them that this behavior does not allow them to learn the material. I am getting to the point where I don't want them to work together, but I like an interactive classroom.

Have you come across this problem in your class? What are some of the solutions you have tried?

There is a theatre. On that stage there were three lights - red, blue and yellow. Can you tell me how these lights might be uesd to create different lighting effects on the stage.

I just know red and blue will make magenta. We know blue and green light make cyan light. But here there is no green light, So blue can't make cyan light. And also when magenta and green overlaps, all three of the primary light colurs are present and we see white light. But here we will not be able to see white light because there is no green light.

Thats all I know. Just tell me if those are wirte. If you wanna share something, go ahead. It will be appriciated.

My wife is Mexican, and has problems writing in English. Which is really strange, because she can read, but when she tries to write she can't visualize the spelling and grammar. What is the best way for an adult to learn? For children I normally recommend reading as much as they can so they get a better idea of what good writing is supposed to look like, but that's not working for her. She can write in Spanish fluently. We're not looking to write a novel yet, just learn enough to pass the immigration test.
