In the math exam, one of the questions, my answer was

The real answer suppose to be -2 ... why take 8 points off? I can understand if the teacher took 2 points off.

because teachers need to feel superior to their students. (i have had the same problem with my teachers)

Points are usually determined by the number of questions there are, based on 100 points. so not knowing if each answer carried the same value I would guess that you had 10-13 questions

answers should always be in simplest form, so yours would not have been. some teachers will take off partial credit, some all credit. just depends on your teacher. partial seems most fair, but many math teachers like the power of screwing people over
