You can give them a grade sheet. They can record their work and calculate their grades. They can see the effect of doing or not doing their homework and can keep track of assignments that they have missed.

You can create a binder and place each days lesson plans in it. When a student is absent they can look up the date in the binder to see the work that they missed. They take responsibility for getting the work and getting it done.
