I want to know how many teachers love their career, and how many don't. What are the ups and downs? Is it rewarding... emotionally? Do you really love your job?

Teaching is a profession and a calling. I love teaching even though students are difficult to handle sometimes. You get the satisfaction that you shared a parcel of yourself to your students and helped mold them to become the persons that they ought to be. But as in all occupation, it's all a matter of perspective, everything depends on how you see things and accept the value of people you deal with.

Teaching is a calling. I cannot imagine doing anything else. I tried something else for a year and hated it. Got back into the classroom as quickly as I could. I have been doing it for 30 years. It can be exhausting and exhilarating. It can make you laugh and cry. You can feel like a success and a failure. And all this can happen before lunch. When I look back over my career I remember most of the students with fondness and the difficult ones with laughter. I have had some wonderful co-workers and administrators. Times have changed since I began teaching, but some things have stayed the same. Students still need to learn and still need a caring teacher to guide them. Some things are more difficult now than they were, but I still feel the thrill when that "light bulb" comes on for a student and they have that "ah-ha" moment. Nothing beats that feeling!

I love teaching. I love seeing people grow, develop, and learn. I love the challenge of helping others learn and the continuous learning that I experience.

I don't love being a teacher. Because of the attitude held by many that I am "just" a teacher. It is difficult to know that this activity that requires so much of my self and gives me so many rewards is considered by many people to be an insignificant job.

I am a teacher. Teaching can be frustrating. The students are not the frustrating part...actually teaching and working with students is the best part of the job. The frustrating parts are uncooperative parents, administrative red tape, dealing with the realities of No Child Left Behind, lack of respect, pay not equal with other professions, all the work that is done at home, etc, etc, etc. Overall, teaching is wonderful, and I am happy I chose it as my profession. However, I can not see myself doing it until I retire. In other jobs, there are chances for advancement and promotion...in teaching, after many years of stellar teaching, you get a promotion all the way to...teacher.

I like the teaching part but I cannot stand the paperwork. I am an English teacher (High School) and I am sick of the hours and hours and hours of grading (especially essays). Why English teachers don't get paid more, I will never know.

I'll separate the conditions from the nature of the work and say I do love sharing my information and learning from my students. I appreciate it when they become more articulate in learning a new language, it is most rewarding.

obviously you´re having seconds thoughts about the teaching profession. it´s like a bachelor asking a married man if he is happy with his wife after 30 years. just because i see my neighbor throwing pans at his husband, doesn´t mean i´ll stay single forever. my 2 children wish everyday their school to disappear just as i wished when i was a kid too. my wife doesn´t hate the job itself but the people she has to deal with. if you expect you students to hug you and tell you what cool teacher you are ! dream on ! at least not in high school. loving or liking your job is a decision you make in spite of all the manure you ran into. does the opinion of others count ? you might consider them but they won´t decide for you on how you perceive you job. i´ve seen garbage truck drivers having the time of their lives when they pass by my house.

i´ve seen movies stars how they degrade themselves in spite of being loved and admired by everybody but deep within they are
miserable because they ¨thought¨ it would make them happy. i am pretty sure they are many happy people in the movie business just as there are many unhappy garbage truck drivers but in the end what counts is your YOU think of yourself and the choices you make.
