What are the possible things a teacher could do to help those pupils who cannot read?

At first I thought you meant pupils who didn't like to read. I was going to suggest comic books of some nature. But I see you mean those whom cannot read. I can only suggest using phonics. My two year old is "learning" through phonics.

Good luck to you. Teachers have one of the toughest yet most important jobs on earth! And if you are not actually a teacher in a classroom, I must still commend you on your willingness to try and help the children in need regardless! ;)

as a parent with 3 kids i can honestly say that most teachers are not concerned with struggling kids, they just want a good pay check and 2 and a half months off in the summer. teachers just seem to pile on home work and expect parents to do the teaching at home, school is for pizza parties, gym fun days, field trips, winter carnival, movies, and a party every holiday marked on a calender, 2 sometimes 3 professional development days a month, its not like it use to be, at one time teachers cared, but maybe this is just the case in my kids school.

Most schools have extra classes for those who cannot read. Try referring the children's' parents to them. There isn't much you can do alone w/o the parents helping the children on the side. You have other children to take care of as well. Don't neglect them. However, in your class, just try not to embarrass them. If you force them to try to read, and they can't, they may be turned away from reading if other children tease them. Give them simple words or phrases that most teachers call "sight words."

I would meet with the parents and tell them about this problem and how they can assist with their children's reading progress at home.
