It depends on where you're at. In our state, you have to have some sort of certificate--which is pretty much a three-day affair in getting a 2-year certification for subbing. You first have to be hired to be a substitute and then they train you for three days and then you can substitute teach. In our area, you do have to have a Bachelor's of Arts degree to be a substitute teacher, but that might differ from area to area. Try looking for your school district's web site and check the employment/jobs link if they have one. If they do, then chances are, there's an application on-line. If they don't, then go to the central office and ask for an application to be a substitute teacher.

In California, you will need to posses a minimum of a B.A degree,a substitute permit which can be obtain through the district that you will be teaching in along with fingerprints which are usually free through the district. The permit will entail a small fee also.

In the US you usually good through the School District Offices. Get out your local Yellow Pages and start calling around.

No degree needed, just go to the school and apply for a "STPA" (substitute teaching program association) all schools have one
