because they feel....
1. they are stupid and there is no use so just cheat
2. they do it to get caught cuz they like attention
3. they don't know the answers and feel stupid if the get the question wrong
but mostly the answer is there embarrassed to look stupid in front of class mate because when the exam gets handed back and they have a failing grade or got the easiest question wrong the feel like their classmates think they're stupid.

What I would answer is that there are actually two groups of "cheating" students: first, there are those students who haven't opened their textbook throughout the whole year (or term) and who want to at least just pass the exam ("I am not looking for a good grade, I just want a pass!"), to brag in front of their friends and parents too that they have done something with their life, by going to university and "studying". In my experience as a teacher (I have taught both grammar and literature), they try to hide small pieces of paper on which whole units are copied down, and what their job is during the test or exam is only to be sly and quick, and look at what the teacher is doing at the moment, where he/she is standing in the classroom. And you can recognize those students from the first 5 minutes of the exam! They just look at you and then in their pockets! It's probably because they want to brag in front of friends: "See, I told you I could pass this exam...... piece of cake!" (I know it's long, but just a couple of more things!)
Then, on the other hand, there are those students who come to every single class (and if, God forbid, they miss one class in the whole year, they start giving you various excuses as to where they were and why they were absent). These great students study hard, do their homework, but I think that they feel a little insecure as to what they will do on the exam and the results they will achieve. They want to be the best, they want to have the highest score and so that is why they cheat, they want to be sure that every single question is answered and nothing important is left out! I am not saying that they haven't studied, but it is this problem of self-confidence. And I am sure that they will (without cheating) get a good result! But this second group is smaller than the first one.
Well, thanks for reading the whole text. That is what I think on this topic.

Basically students cheat in the examinations to pass or to score good marks or to get a comfortable marks so that they may not be fired or slapped when they reach their respective homes.

Aside from the fact that it's easier (well, that depends on how you define "easy"), not to mention more exciting and thrilling, to pass the examinations through cheating, it's also a form of power play. It's like saying to the professor, "Hey, dumbass! I'm cheating and I'm getting away with it!"
