I am currently studying at university to become a teacher, and a group of friends and I recently had a debate as to how far we as teachers can go in promoting duscussions in class. the war in Iraq for example. is there any harm in asking a class of 14-18 y/o students to compare views on topics like the war, abortion, suicide, mental illness, cancer etc?

not far at all.. other than telling them people that offer candy to get in the car are bad.. run away...

i personally think one of the biggest problems in life today is kids are OVER protected and they are not punished enough or harsh enough for the things.. and lack of things they do....

we have become a nation of weak people.. always out to get something for nothing... it is someone else that has to give us OUR stuff. that we didnt earn... i'm 35 years old.. and it makes me so mad when I see younger people say... 25 down that work at getting out of work... we need to get back to the times when kids had to earn there own way... there is nothing wrong with a 14 or 15 year old knowing about any of the things you listed...

pretty much most of them are already into sex and drugs anyway... so what is knowing about cancer going to do? or war.. or any of the above.. it is part of life....
protecting them from it does more harm than good...

take the current public school system.. they suck.. a lot of kids have to take classes to get to college level before they can goto college...
also when i went to school everyone knew.. that some kids just didnt have what it took to be in school.. those people had more of a trade skill way of thinking.. they could work well with there hands... guess what they took the trade class out of school... or lessen them a great deal...

let kids be kids.. yes... but mother henning them will do more damage than good

for 14-18 year olds, I think you can discuss all of the issues you mentioned. Sometimes with 14 year olds you have to be careful about using certain terminology, but that only applies to a few terms. For the most part, when I teach my eighth grade classes, we talk about those things sometimes and have good discussions.
