Even though I tell them specifically in the assignment that Wikipedia cannot be used, I always have at least three or four in the class who insist on using it. I tell them it can't be considered a "credible" source since anyone--including them--could add material to it.

I am a currently employed as a teacher in a public school district. I can never remember teachers leaving in the middle of the year. Are we allowed to do so (I imagine we would have to be). If so, does anyone know the proper steps to take? Do I give two weeks notice, as in other jobs? Is there someone I should contact to ask the specifics? If anyone is a teacher who has quit or thought about quitting during a school year, please advise.

I am in charge of teacher appreciation day for the month of January for my Student Council. My school has approx 40 teachers/staff that are to be recognized. I need to do something that cost no more than $100. Any ideas? Any websites with ideas would be helpful too, all I could find were ideas for a few teachers and would get to be quite expensive for more than 5 or so teachers.

I own an English school in a medium sized city (Kurume) in Japan. I teach only adults. My budget is small, I hand out flyers at the station. My school is only 3 or 4 minutes walk from the train station. My problem is I'm having great difficulty attracting students to my school. Do any of you have some creative ideas other than radio, TV or print ads which are too expensive for me right now?

If compulsory schooling is so great and works better than homeschooling, why are people dumber?

If you look at a fifth grade math book from the 1840s it's what we'd call like college level today. Books that were written for the common man are now considered deep and dense and tough. All of this consides rather conveniently with when we started forcing people to go through twelve years of Prussian style schooling which was never supposed to educate in the first place, have you read Horace Mann and his contemporaries?

If you can give me a decent refutation I will be incredibly grateful.

Also, why do you keep on acting like homeschoolers need to prove themselves? If anything you schoolers do. We're as old as humanity and you guys are only about 150 years old. So even if creationists are right -which I don't believe- we have about 5850 years on you.

I expect to retire in the next three years from a career in computing. I originally wanted to be a teacher when I went to college 40 years ago. For financial reasons I found a different profession. I now would like to teach but the idea of going back to school to get a masters degree is daunting. I believe I would like to be a classroom aid in a local elementary school. I live in Seattle Washington.

I'm an elementary school music teacher and i'm looking for some activities to help the students and I get to know each other the first day. I've got a couple of games like "who stole the cookie jar" , but I'm trying to find some other things that are simple. It doesn't necessarily have to be a music activity either.

I'm a teacher who will be starting an after school literacy club. We will be reading books, and incorporating different literacy skills like vocabulary, comprehension, story elements, etc. into each book we read. Any ideas on some fun names for my club? I'll have 2 different clubs - one for 2nd and 3rd graders, and one for 4th and 5th graders. I'm having a hard time coming up with anything but "Book Worms" and "Hooked on Books" So if there are any ideas out there please share! Thanks!

Robert MacKenzie suggests Friday Folders in his "Setting Limits in the Classroom." I think the book is mainly for elementary teachers, but I think I'd like to try it in my HS Spanish classes.

Students receive all homework assignments for the week in their folders on Mon. and must turn them in on Fri. Those who don't miss out on the Friday fun & have homework over the weekend. Also, parents are to review & sign folders each week, maybe commenting.

I can't just have free days like elem. classes, but my kids do enjoy cultural discussion and review games, so maybe they wouldn't be allowed to participate in those if their folders were incomplete.

I like this policy because it gives quick kids a chance to zoom ahead and slow kids a chance to catch up while getting parents involved. I'm just afraid it'll get tossed in the bag like any other assignment--perhaps getting lost even quicker.

Would Friday folders would have the intended effect with high school kids as well as elem. kids?
