I'm not sure if this is what you are asking about. In English, a "hod" is a tool that is used by masons - workers who build using stone and bricks. The hod is used to carry the mortar - the cement - that is used to stick the bricks together.
100 years ago before we had modern equipment, a hod was made from two flat pieces of wood, stuck together to form a trough or carrier. A long handle was attached.
The worker would put a shovelfull of wet cement on the hod, put the hod on his shoulder and climb up a ladder to the level where the other workers were putting the bricks into the new wall.

This was really hard work. The cement was heavy and you had to climb a ladder carrying it over your shoulder. But you didnt need a lot of training to learn to do it. So, in the early days of the USA, back in the 1800s, most of the men who "carried a hod" were immigrants who were ignorant, often didnt speak English or have any job skills. It was a very low status job.
