Dangerous Minds? Dead Poets' Society? Stand and Deliver?... Or the latest Freedom Writers?...
How in your opinion do films like that affect the way people see our profession?

Mr. Holland's Opus.

He affected students and was equally affected by them.

He wasn't perfect yet he wasn't the "bad guy." And he had a life at home.

Most teacher movies set up unrealistic "hero" status to teachers or most TV shows portray them as --- well, less than flattering light. It either set people up to have a romantic notion of "being a teacher and saving the world" or give the people the idea that teachers are out-of-touch idiots.

You forgot "187" with Samuel Jackson. It was written by a teacher.

I don't think it changes the way people view the profession. I don't think most teachers are like the "outstanding educators" in the films you mentioned. If everyone were like that, there would be nothing amazing to write a film about.

I'm not sure some of the progressive techniques really work outside of Hollywood. It seems like a lot of times kids are just dismissed as having a learning disorder and put on medications.

I kinda like Finding Forrester.

TV and reality are two different things. I find many teachers should not be teaching. They either lost that spark in which they had when they started or they developed a fear of the kids, or they just do not get paid enough for what they have to go through.
One of our teachers had to take on the WHOLE fifth grade by himself. There is no other fifth grade teacher but him, I feel for the guy!
Anyhoo since I realize TV is not real life not much. Even when the show was based off of real life, not much real life is left after the TV people get a hold of the story.
So bottom line, nothing.
