I'm an elementary school music teacher and i'm looking for some activities to help the students and I get to know each other the first day. I've got a couple of games like "who stole the cookie jar" , but I'm trying to find some other things that are simple. It doesn't necessarily have to be a music activity either.

Hm. My favorite ice breaker is one we use in my college club almost every week and the students all LOVE it--it's very simple and can be very silly, and is a quick way to get everyone talking and involved. It's called "Name and WHAT?" and you go around the room and each student tells their name and something predetermined by you--in this case, something like, "If you were a musical instrument, what would you be?" Or, "what's the coolest sound effect you can make?" In college, we often do more PG-13/R rated things, but it can easily be adapted for any age. When I was a camp counselor, even my shy kids loved it. :)

When I taught elementary music, I incorporated a lot of theatre games as ice-breaker activities. With lower elementary students, I would play a circle game where students stand and face each other then I would call out an article of clothing. Everyone with that article (such as "black shoes" or "white shirt") would change to a different position in the circle. With the upper elementary students I used a game called "numbers". Students spread out around the room and you call out a number. They have a few seconds to join together in a group of that size. So if you call out "3" then only 3 people can form a group. Call out 7, and 7 people can link up, and so forth. To make sure no one felt left out, I would use only those numbers that ensured every kid got to be part of a group. This activity moves quickly and gets the kids up and moving and laughing.

Remember: You are not required to reply unless it is a legal or a life and death situation. And if you see each other again, NEVER bring it up. If that person does bring it up, just tell her that you were busy and read it the last minute when you are about to log out. "oh sorry, i got busy.." Women understand that it's a "guy" thing not to reply and to forget. And then play it cool. Sometimes it is easier to play dumb on situations that you never want to get involved in.. plus, you won't look rude. Ohhh, sorry. I misunderstood your question. Anyway, if you want to get close to a guy, the best question you can ask should be "hey, are you a gamer?" if the answer is "yes," then ask if he has an NFL or frozen throne you can borrow. Computer/PSP/xbox games are usually the best ice breakers.

One icebreaker idea is to break the class into groups, play various instruments from a boombox and have the kids guess the instruments by interacting within the group, on a time limit. The group with the most correct answers wins some sort of prize. This is a fun exercise, that takes pressure of you, and incorporates peer to peer sharing and learning. Good luck!

You could try something like Status Que or something fun sounding.
This may be good for children over about 7 years old.
