I wanted to know if any middle school custodians had any inside scoop about middle schoolers. What do you think of them? What do you observe? How do you think one can gain their trust? What do you find that is most important to them? What values do they have? How would you manage them in a classroom? What do you wish teachers would do? What do you appreciate that teachers or students do? Any insight?

There has been a big myth about why kids from Asian background is good at maths and the Caucasian kids aren't as good. Many people blame it on coaching industry and that parents force kids to work harder, ... But no one seems to care about the English problems of migrant kids.

The Asian kids are only good at maths because they have to work harder in maths to make up for their English disadvantages. In English speaking countries like the US, Canada and Australia, migrant kids always trail local kids in English due to the lack of a good English speaking home environment.

However I feel that Asian kids are still not quite matching white kids on the top level of abstract maths. That's why we still see that most top mathematicians at Universities are still Caucasians. or perhaps this is only because Asian kids are more interested in making money (there is not much money in being a mathematician)

Any ideas?

I am teaching right now in 4th grade and have a student who LOVES to read. He will read any chance he gets- what a problem, right? Well, the main problem is that his reading will occur during math, cursive, transition periods, etc. He gets absorbed into his books and only comes back to reality after I call his name 3 or 4 times. He is doing fine in these other subjects, and I don't mind that he reads except that he never finishes work unless I stand right by him. And when we do cooperative groups, he complains and a few times has gotten tears in his eyes. He is only 9 and I want him to continue his love for reading, but he is missing out on the social interaction, and I fear that he will have problems in his future, especially since he is a lot smaller than his peers. He gets along with his classmates, but it takes effort to get him away from his book and talk with his peers. Any suggestions?
