Well the effects on who? As a general rule it teaches tolerance for children to not make fun of a person's special needs. The special needs child is generally more happy because they aren't excluded from doing things. It also depends on the child's "special" need. My son is a special needs kid because of genetic abnormalities; however, he is very very smart. Inclusion is the best thing for everyone in my opinion and that is why most kids have their own aides to guide them through the classes.

When special needs students are included what SHOULD happen is that all memebers of the class learn to appreciate each others' differences, talents, strengths and weaknesses. Children should learn that not everybody learns in the same way or the same speed and they should learn to have compassion for for others. They will also learn that even the most disabled of people have something to offer to class discussions. Teachers should learn new ways to teach the same old stuff - ways that benefot not just the "disabbled" students but the "normal" ones too. If you become a better teacher for special needs children, chances are you will become a better all around teacher at the same time. That's my theory at least.

I personally think this would slow down the whole class and the special needs child would get probably lots more attention from the teacher than the gifted and high ability learner.
I am sure the special needs child would benefit from being in a regular class room, but I would be afraid that my high-ability-learners would suffer.
