This is an example of what's wrong with the concept of homework in the U.S. Homework should be about REINFORCING skills learned in the classroom. This means that children should be able to do it by themselves. If they CAN'T do it by themselves, then this should be a project that is supervised in the classroom. Parents should not have to go to such great lengths to research and scout out resources for their kids' homework!

The teacher should be providing "all kinds of help." That's what they're paid for. Please ask the teacher if your daughter misunderstood the assignment, as it is obvious that your DAUGHTER does not know how to proceed with the project. If it turns out that this assignment is truly not age-appropriate, then perhaps you should look into your district's homework policy and whether it has any shortcomings that need adjustment.

i did a science fair project comparing the different results of filtering water through sand or rocks. i forgot the outcome but it works.

cut the soda bottle in half and fill it with sand. put a cup under it. then add dirt water(water mixed with dirt) and pour it through. the sand should filter most of the dirt out.
you can also try with small rocks instead of sand.
=) good luck!

Neither cotton or wool are man-made and would filter some particulates out.

I just found something similar on pbskids.org. See the link.
