Don't do it if you do not have your own confidence to know that you can do it regardless of what others think, don't do it. When you are in med school you will be faced with a lot of challenges, so if you were strong enough to handle it.. none of this would be a question. You have to know in your guts that you can not do anything but be a doctor. you have to eat drink sleep and breath this stuff, and even when school is over you still have to have unshakeable confidence, if not you will not be successful.

Plus you have to realize that this is a huge time commitment on your part as well as money unless you have that covered. most schools now are 100-200K for all 4 years of med school. Then you have a residency which might be like 3 years. Many people do not know what it is like to make such a huge personal commitment. It may mean that you may start your family like 10 years after your friends who just did a bachelors. It may mean that if you have kids you do not have time to spend with them like you'd want to. It means from med school through you residency, those are years of lost earning potential and if you have to get student loans for school that's even worse. Plus re-imbursements are unchanged or less than they were a few years ago while everything else has increased. Can you handle this?

I don't know what they mean by 'weak' and that you can't handle it. It could be some sort of quick and ill-informed judgement about your physical strength, or maybe they think you can't stand the sight of blood or the long hours involved at certain points in your training... strikes me as a pretty cruel and thoughtless thing to say to someone who has set their heart on a career helping people. I'd be inclined to ask myself whether I respect their judgement (and their own strength) as they apply it in their own lives.

Now let's get practical. First, doctors specialise once they've qualified, and different specialties suit different people. Second, there are very, very few specialties that require huge amounts of physical strength and endurance - I've spent a lot of time interviewing doctors and believe me they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There'll be a few yucky bits in the training (for everyone) but the people in med school know how to overcome those difficulties.

Some specialties take a good deal of strength of character to do well - like psychiatry, for example, which doesn't give the instant rewards that (for example) emergency surgery provides. And the one test of strength of character that you'll not be warned about is the efforts it'll take to tangle with the bureaucracies that manage health delivery. But - you go for it. It seems as if you've got a lot of people on your side giving you their blessing, and if it's what you really want then you'll not be satisfied with anything less.

All strength to you.

Do it! Everybody tells me that i'm weak too. Also my counsler because when i told her that i wanted to into the medical field she told me if i was sure & she wanted to put me in to work with little kids but i told her no. Then she told me if i had any trouble in the medical class to go back 2 her. But now i'm proving her and everybody else wrong. This year i will become a CNA certified.

I also want to become a doctor, surgeon, or a pediatrician.
but first i have to become a nurse. I also had bad grades. So dont let anybody take your dreams.

I know how you feel.

Become a doctor because you love the field of medicine and you love helping people. If you're going for it for the love of money, you will crash and burn before you start studying for the extremely hard 8 hour MCATs ( Medical College Admissions Test)

If you love the field, then you can surely do it

Amal,
Never let other people discourage you from doing something. Don't let anyone make you believe that you are weak or that you can't do it-
Keep up the good work and we'll all call you Dr. Amal later.

As long as your grades are good. You can do it. People are trying to control you. Ignore Them.
