It depends on whether a university uses a "quarter" system or a "semester" system, I think.
For example, the University of Georgia formerly used a "quarter" system, but now they are on a "semester" system:
Spring Semester orientation began Jan 3, ends May 14
Summer Semester begins May 14, ends June 11
Fall Semester begins August 13, ends December 18
(There is no "Winter Semester")
But Athens Technical College, which is located in the same town, is on a "quarter" system:
Winter Quarter began January 3, ends March 23
Spring Quarter begins April 2, ends around June 22(?)
Summer Quarter begins around July 1, ends around September 14(?)
Fall Quarter begins around September 21, ends around December 12(?)
(I am guessing on some of the Athens Technical College dates, because they don't post dates that far in advance on their Web site. But I have been a student there for three years now, so I believe my guesses are fairly accurate.)
Definitely check out different schools, and view their posted orientation dates. If you plan to apply to a college, be sure to look for their application deadline dates. Some schools allow you to apply one or two months in advance, but some schools require you to apply 6 months or more in advance. If you will be an international student, start early so that you can accomplish getting transcripts (etc.) to the school of your choice before the application deadlines.
Here is the Web site of a U.S. Government publication from the Dept. of State which seems to be of help to an international student seeking to study in the U.S. I hope it helps!

OK, so most of your answerers are basically right, but kinda unclear. You have two types of terms at most schools. Either they are on the "quarter system", in which case there are 4 quarters per year, and most people attend for 3 quarters and take the summer off; or they're on the "semester system" which has a Fall Semester and a Spring Semester, plus again, an optional summer term. You'll need to check with the school you've applied to if you want to find out what their system is. If it's quarters, it will be 3 times whatever, and if its semesters it will be 2 times whatever.

Well to know exactly when the semmesters start and end is not uniformed so you need to state which university(s) you are looking to attend. Usually the Fall semester will start around September 1st and end around December 20th. The Spring Semester will start around January 15th and end by May 20th. However, these dates are not written in stone - they are just best guesses and you need to check with the colleges you apply too.
Good Luck!!!
