Software - July 2007

I installed windows 2000 upgrade over 98 on another computer, and even installed service pack 4 and cannot install ANY updates. I was prompted to install windows installer and BITS and winhttp 5.1 and they fail. I cannot install any other updates because these initial ones fail and will not take me further. Can anyone help here?

If a person shrinks their 60GB XP partition and formats the new partition as a FAT32 partition, could Windows 98 then be installed onto the new partition without disturbing the existing XP. The user has music and pictures on his computer but does not play games.

i have completely stuffed up my laptop os (windows xp) and i am looking for a free operating system to replace it.

i intend to do a moderate amount of gaming, but will still need it to be functional for work. i have got cd's of linux ubuntu and knoppix but i am not sure if either are suitable.

could you please reccomend a free operating system for me?

p.s. i don't want anything dodgey or stolen.

I'm buying a laptop that has a DOS Operating System and I don't know what that is or the programs it has....Is it similar to like Microsoft XP? Does it have Microsoft word and all those other programs...? If not....what does it have?

I have installed lotus Notes 6.5.1 on a windows vista laptop. When I try to launch the program to finish the setup the lotus screen comes up and then leaves. Any idea as to why it won't run?

I have MS Office 2003. All of a sudden all of my Word documents will only open using Word Pad. When I click on a file that I had previously saved in Word it will only open using Word Pad. Any Idea why?? How can I change this back to openning automatically with Word?? Thank you for any insight.

I have the image iso file. and i am trying to use Nero 7. But everytime i try to put it on the cd. it works fine. and when i try to boot from the disk to install it. It begins to work but then it has problems. Can someone give me steps on how to use Nero 7 to put the image on my cd. or if there is another program i can use or another Version of Linux that is recommended

I am reinstalling XP on my computer. I had to reformat the drive since it had way too much crap on it. The reformatting has taken about 4 hours. It was at 90% for about 45 min, and an hour later, its at 93.

Is there any reason it would take this long? Did something go wrong? should I just start over?

Will, I pressed F11 and absolutely nothing happened.

OK :-| Everytime i go to IE i can browse around a bit and such, but when i go to close it, and sometimes when i DONT go to close it, a thing pops up saying "IE has stopped working a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program." ............................

I love my new computer as i am a researcher/writer. But this is VERY frustrating. ANY IDEAS on how to fix this?

my computer is a DELL about a little more than a year old. about 5 minutes ago i was surfing online and a error dialog popped up
it said error as the title and then it showed the type of computer i have which is a pentium 4 and windows XP home edition and it was a tiny rectangular box and it had three tabs: one that said ok, i forgot what the middle one said and one that said send error report
and then a bunch of letters and numbers after that
is there something wrong
i clicked ok and my computer seems fine
does anyone know what this is?

no1 deleted limewire cuz i see it's stil under control panel. everytime i click limewire now, it says "limewire cannot be found. May have been deleted or another technical problem. You do not have permission to write from or write on to...". whats going on? i restarted my computer and it still says that. i bought a MyBook last week to tranfer files from my old computer to this 1. does the mybook have anything to do with this?!?!
