All of my MS Word docs are converted to use Word Pad.?

Question

I have MS Office 2003. All of a sudden all of my Word documents will only open using Word Pad. When I click on a file that I had previously saved in Word it will only open using Word Pad. Any Idea why?? How can I change this back to openning automatically with Word?? Thank you for any insight.

go to any of the files and right click it and choose "open with...". then choose to pick the program from a menu if it asks, and find microsoft word and check the box that says "always use this program...." and ok. should fix it. sometimes installing some programs may change some settings, usually they just need to be set back.

It might have happened because of one of these things
1. MS Word 2003 may be uninstalled - Install a fresh copy of the MS Office
2. Right click the word document --> Open with --> Choose MS Word 2003 --> Click "Always use this program"

Assuming the extension is still .doc not .rtf, your File Associations are messed up.

To change the File Association, right-click on any WordPad file and choose "Open With". Then click on "Choose Program..."

Choose Word, then Check the "Always use this program to open this kind of file." Box, then OK.

Now, Windows will use that app every time you double-click on a Doc file, as it did when first installed.

This happened to me not too long ago. I changed the setting for rich text documents to open with WordPad, so when I opened a regular .doc file, it opened in WordPad. To change this, right click your rich text document and select open with... and select MS Word. This should work.
