There are a few ways to do it.
If you just want to remove the icons in the system tray, right click the icon and open preferences in the program and look for an option to not display the tray icon.
To keep the program from starting up with windows, click Start/Run and type "msconfig" in the run box. Click the startup tab on the right and uncheck any programs you do not want to start with windows. Be careful what you uncheck because many of those processes are needed by windows.
To remove the program altogether, go to Control Panel and in classic view, click Add/Remove programs. Then select the program from the list and remove.
There may be other programs that start up because they have a shortcut in your "start up" folder. Click Start/All Programs and look for the folder called Startup. Right click and Open. Then delete any shortcuts you do not want there. You can always put them back if you change your mind.

To remove programs from startup, click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu. Click the Start Menu tab. Click Customize.
Select that which you want to remove from startup, then click remove.
Be careful and do not remove anything you are unsure of or you will be looking for additional help.
The area on the bottom right is the notification area. This link will take you to an explanation complete with graphics.

From the Start Menu, select Run.
Type in "MSCONFIG", and click ok.
This opens the configuration utility.
Click the "Startup" tab.
Uncheck any programs that you do not want to automatically run in the background. You may have to read closely to figure out what each one is.
Restart the computer. You will get a message when you restart telling you that you have altered the startup routine. Check the box to tell it not to show you the message again.

Short answer:
Start->Run->Type "msconfig" without the quotes.
You can pick and choose from the startup tab here which programs you wish to run at startup.
Good luck!
