Trillian is by far the best. u can use aim, msn mess, yahoo, icq, and more. i highly recommend it.

Each one is different. If a friend uses yahoo, then you can ONLY talk to him on yahoo, unless he has an AOL AIM account on which you can only talk to him on AIM, or if he has a Windows Live Messanger (MSN), you can only talk to him on MSN.
It is possible to have all three by the way. But you have to use the program they are using.

well, aim is the most popular of them all,
but msn messenger is really cool, it has awesome fonts and webcam and stuff.
