i intend to do a moderate amount of gaming, but will still need it to be functional for work. i have got cd's of linux ubuntu and knoppix but i am not sure if either are suitable.

could you please reccomend a free operating system for me?

p.s. i don't want anything dodgey or stolen.

As playing games go Windows is the only choice that is viable. That is unfortunate but Linux programmers aren't doing the coding commercially so they have a tendancy of stop when programs are working for non-critical stuff like games, things end up half-baked at this point.

Ubuntu and Knoppix are good enough to use for work, those are considered as critical and even more so mature than their Windows counterpart; but a Linux system slapping on a WineX layer is as close as you can get to a free gaming system although that is not 100%.

My favorite is LinuxMint:

and Sabayon Linux

You should really give both a try. However, Linux is generally poor for gaming. There is Cedega by Transgaming, Inc:

and it's controversial in the Linux community, but definitely the superior option for playing Windows games right on Linux. It also requires a subscription, so that's something to think about.

Voted the easiest to use operating system with the best support. Has good support for hardware drivers. Your going to have to look around for what you want. My favorite Linux Distributions:
-Ubuntu
-Fedora
-SuSe
-Mandrake
