My wife just called me and said there was a loud beep and then the pc just shut off. My guess the beep could have been the pc but could also be the Battery Backup. The power never went off this morning though. When she restarted it, the keyboard wasn't working. Two days ago an update popped up on the screen and looked like it either updated windows media player or itunes. I think it was the media player. The thing is, I disabled all of automatic updates on eveything. I didn't pay attention to what was on the screen when the update part came up, and I also tried to disable/ cancel anything. SOMETHING did go through though/update. It also asked me about some security setting on media player after it happened. After I click no or cancel the pc kinda locked up/slowed down for a minuteNow I'm just not sure what it is or what I can do to check it out. Any ideas?

As you know, I don't have a router. I just use the Windows one and my pc is up and running constantly.

I ran Windows update on my XP PC and selected all. It made my Windows firewall applet break and Windows shares become unavailable. The firewall applet wouldn't opne in Control panel.

I fixed it by reinstalling XP SP2.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Ran an online scan with something called Bitdefender, which found 3 viruses actually in thr Symantec files. A Wln 32 worm VB DW and two Backdoor RBot. EOG's. What are these things? What do they do? And why are they there? I may know nothing about computers, but I can see when something clearly doesn't work. Bye bye Norton.

Every once in a while when I use my Yahoo tool bar free Norton spyware scan, it always finds these 2 things.

When I use full scan it never finds the "Fake alert". If I use "quick scan", then it will find the "fake alert"

I find it funny that the full scan does not find them both???
Well,.. that would be another question. I just want to know what these 2 things are??

The fake alert is a file called TMP8.TMP

Anyone one knows about this and the backdoor trojan?

Hi there you wonderful people.

I'm quite a retard when it comes to windows systems and because of that my question might sound a bit funny to the "geeks".

Is there a way to track down if someone was using my PC while I was not there? I mean, is there some sort of log file which stores simple things like times of the day the comp was switched on and off? I know there is third party products but I want to know if there is a built in way to check if the computer was switched on while I was away.
This is pretty much all I want to know anyway, don't need to know what the "intruder" did though.

Anybody here who can help?

Thanks heaps
Pete

I am looking for a third party firewall that offers solid protection & is user friendly, light on resources, etc.

My only hesitation is since I'm not very familiar with computers outside surfing the web, e-mail, basic programs, etc, I'm afraid that I will give access to bad "people" and programs. Like for instance, on the Zone Alarm and I'm sure other firewalls, the pop ups come up to ask if you want to accept or deny access. If they randomly come up, how do I be positive that the program is safe? If I said "ok" by accident, it's then possible for pretty bad things to happen to my computer, correct?

Any input for a beginner would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you can suggest a user friendly, solid firewall that's light on resources that would be great.

I have Windows XP SP2, IE 6, and I use the computer for surfing the web, e-mail, and realplayer, etc. I have 1 GB of RAM.

I am having trouble accessing a (.edu) site. I am trying to do some school work and I know the link works because all the other students use it. I've checked the link and every time I try to access it, I get a "you might be behind a firewall" message or "it's taking too long to answer and it times out". Can anybody tell me how to fix a firewall problem or if that's even the problem? What would cause a site not to display? I've tried to get help from our IT department, and have also called my own ISP but doesn't look like anyone has the smarts to tell me what it is.....Gosh people...can anybody help me? Have an awesome day ya'll!

I had my homepage set to yahoo, but when I click the home button it takes me to the google search. I keep changing it back but it won't stay. I've already changed it back in the internet options and clicked apply, it's not something that I haven't done. My antivirus used to alert me when someone was trying to change my home page, but it doesn't do it with google. How do I get rid of the google homepage ASIDE from changing the internet options every 5 min.? This is a new problem that just started happening. There's another poster with the same problem. Any ideas how and why google is taking over?
