I ran Windows update on my XP PC and selected all. It made my Windows firewall applet break and Windows shares become unavailable. The firewall applet wouldn't opne in Control panel.

I fixed it by reinstalling XP SP2.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

It doesn't do that!?!?

You'd probably had some files go corrupt which got fixed when you installed SP2!!!!

That's really unheard of. I would be willing to bet that one of the following happened:

- the update failed to load for some reason, causing several Windows components to become corrupted, which in turn affected the firewall

- you have a 3rd-party app installed that didn't like the update, and somehow impacted the firewall

- you have a 3rd-party app installed that conflicted with the firewall, which had nothing to do with the update

- you had a virus/spyware infection around the same time that you applied the Windows update giving it the appearance that it was the problem

Are you 100% sure the update was the cause, or did you just notice several days or weeks later that the firewall was disabled? Something had to have brought that to your attention. I doubt you would have just wondered into the firewall settings right after to see if it was turned off.
