Laptops & Notebooks - January 2007

I have seen a laptop which has a good price with a core duo processor by intel and 1gb of ram , however the screen is 14" and not the average 15.?" screen. Does anybody have any opinion on this?
I have noticed that many laptops are expensive and have these size screens , so some busines professionals must prefer it because it is lighter, but I would never take mine outside of my home. Also the speakers on it (it is a gateway) are not very good I dont think, not like the Altec lansing speakers on Compaq or HP. But it is a good price.

One day I was reading the directory manuals on my laptop and somehow I turned on this Apache monster and it hides in the background...or rather it looms!
I need to know how to remove it and/or the other junk that slows my g4 powerbook down.

This has been going on for a while, but whenever my computer gets on an internet connection other than the one at my parent's house, like one at school or at a cafe, it will constantly disconnect and reconnect, so my browsing constantly hiccuping. Even when everyone else in the room gets internet fine. The signal bars also never reach above two, even when the signal is full bars on other computers.

We have tried many different wireless cards and it happens the same with all of them, so it's probably something in my computer. It's really frustrating and I've had several different people look at it to no avail.

The card right now is a 2wire and so is the network at my parent's house and the computer runs Windows XP.

I'd really like a simple solution to this if possible! The other option another person gave me was to reformat the hard drive, but I'd rather not do that. Thanks!

ok, i have a few questions
1> My laptop has some buttons to access the web and open e-mail software and a help button but none of them work. does anybody know how to get them to open those specific programs. my laptop is a HP OmniBook XE3-gf and i don't have the manufacturers cd or anything like that.
2> My laptops HD isnt loud but when you go and open somthing like firefox or anything to do with opening something it clicks really fast.
3> How do you cool down a really hot laptop.

I have a mini memory card that i have placed in teh slot on the side of my laptop for the first time and it worked,now i try to use it again five minutes later and it doesn't work?i noticed dust in there and cleaned it out and it still doesn't work?why and what can i do to fix this?

I have a dell inspiron 1100 laptop and on the bottom of it are three lights, the last one for battery charging now blinks uncontrollably in this order: orange 3 times then green once and it keeps repeating like that even though the battery is fully charged

p.s. this problem started when the waring: low battery power sign came up cause i had less than 10% batt. power, so i plug it back in and same thing...even if i reboot, take/put back in the battery it doesnt stop that...it doesnt affect anything, but it isn't normal so please help....thank you.

I was given a Sony Vaio PCG-731 and want to use it only for the internet and some Mircosoft Works documents. It has a 10GB hard drive, two 64MB sticks, a wireless card, and a Symantec Antivirus program.

I have a couple questions:

A) I want to know how to see how much free memory I have available so I can clear out some unnecessary stuff.

B) I seem to get these pop-up adds telling me my computer 'may' be infected and to purchase these kits to clean out any virus I might have. How do I get this to stop? When I log onto the internet these adds pop-up before my home page does. I updated my Symantec add ran a scan on my entire computer and it found and quarintined a virus/bug. But I still have problems with the adds and pop-ups. Plus my internet seems like it is slower then when I first got it. Any ideas???

C) What extra things can I do to make the internet a little bit faster (would a bigger hard drive help, is it worth it)???

Ok I recently bought a new Dell laptop that has been working great for me, but my old Toshiba Satellite has been out of use obviously for a long time.

When I was using the Toshiba as my sole computer, it was old, a '99 but it didn't crash and always turned on with my A/C adapter(the battery was dead so I can't use it). Now that it has been dormant for about 4 months, I plugged it back in, in order to transfer some info from my old to my new, but now the adapter just won't start up at all.

Why is this? I haven't dropped it, it was fine.

Any tips?

USB dominates in jump drive technology, but why can there not be firewire based jump drives ? they are faster for video editing, so what is the limitation?

i have been under control panel and it says i have no attached speakers. it is a laptop so the speakers are inside. also, the volume icon in the lower right hand corner does not show up either, and i cannot find a way to get the volume working again! if you have any idea how this problem could be fixed, that would be great!!

My laptop meets the maximum system requirements of WINDOWS VISTA HOME BASIC, but I'm not sure if I can run it because Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor says Home Basic is not best for laptop because of some Windows Mobility Center thing... the sleep light was pulsing yesterday, i put in a fresh battery, still nothing. i gave up, tried again today, pushed the button on the battery (is that a reset button?) and i think that helped. (though it didn't yesterday, and it isn't right now)and it booted right up.time/date and everything had to be reset. i thought i was saved, turned it off for a few hours. now, NOTHING. not even the 'sleep' light is on...my life is on this computer, so i know i should be more of a techie, but i don't have a clue! oh, and my warranty is over, so mac won't bother helping me. any macheads out there got any suggestions about what i should try?

It has 1.2 GHZ & 256 MB Built in. Yes, it is running a little slow due to water log( the arrow keys do not work) but, still functioning. It may die soon but in the mean time still working. It does not close, you have to slowly move the top to close it properly. Some of the letter keys (20 to be exact) are scuffed off and some of the keys are dirty. Can someone give me some estimates? Thanks!
