i have been under control panel and it says i have no attached speakers. it is a laptop so the speakers are inside. also, the volume icon in the lower right hand corner does not show up either, and i cannot find a way to get the volume working again! if you have any idea how this problem could be fixed, that would be great!!

try restarting you're laptop. if it doesnt work, try installing windows(if you're using one) withouth reformatting it.

This could be for several reason the most frequent one is that either the sound card is not install properly or the windows sound service is not started. Now lets try the service , open control panel and open administrator tools then open services and at the in the of the list look for one that says windows audio and see if its started if not then start it . if that dosent work then it could be that the network card is not properly install or the drivers fail to load

Somewhere on your laptop should be a jack to hook a regular set of headphones to, hook up a pair, see if you can hear sound. If you can, your sound card is working, your speakers aren't. Two options, assuming the sound card is working, pay allot of money to get the laptop fixed, or plunk down some money for a set of portable speakers and plug them in where you plugged in the headphones (cheaper, quicker, though not that convenient to lug around. start > control panel > sound and audio devices
click on sounds tab
At the bottom choose a program event, and it will display a drop down menu under sounds. IF you click on it many default sounds will be listed, choose one and click on the play button , you should hear a sound. if you do not listen any sound here then you have to reinstall the sound drivers. detect and google its name to find out its driver, which you can download and install on your computer easily.

The drivers is usually the case, try reinstalling them or checking them for updates
