the sleep light was pulsing yesterday, i put in a fresh battery, still nothing. i gave up, tried again today, pushed the button on the battery (is that a reset button?) and i think that helped. (though it didn't yesterday, and it isn't right now)and it booted right up.time/date and everything had to be reset. i thought i was saved, turned it off for a few hours. now, NOTHING. not even the 'sleep' light is on...my life is on this computer, so i know i should be more of a techie, but i don't have a clue! oh, and my warranty is over, so mac won't bother helping me. any macheads out there got any suggestions about what i should try?

Try resetting PMU.

If not then maybe Apple Hardware Test will diagnose the problem.

The button on the battery has 4 or 5 lights, which tell you how much charge is left in the battery. If you want to reset your PowerBook, turn it off (it seems like it's already off) and hold down CMD + Option + P + R to reset your computers PRAM (which is like date and time). It would help to know how old your Mac is, because if your PRAM battery is dead (much like a BIOS battery) then your computer won't start. The bad thing about Mac design is that this battery is very hard to replace if it does die. It's a lithium battery, so the expected lifetime is about 5 years, although your mileage may vary. Just had a 5 year old iMac bite the dust with these symptoms. No sleep light, no power, had to buy a Mac Mini.

You can always pay someone at an Apple dealer to fix it for you, or remove the hard drive, but that's $$$!

Good luck, hope this helps!

Take the battery out and try to start it with just the power supply. A dead pram battery won't keep it from starting. You'll just lose the time and some display settings.

If you know of someone with the same type of laptop try theirs, if not try taking your laptop to a mac dealer for diagnostic. As far as your info nothing to worry about, its still on the hard drive. So before you get a new powerbook take the harddrive out of the dead one its usually reall simple. Just read the users manual.
