How do I reduce the page file usage to speed up my laptop?
Do I really need more than half a gig of RAM?

Well, the reason you are using so much page file is because you don't have enough physical memory (the page file is where things are stored when you run out of physical memory). If you upgrade to a full gb you will notice a real improvement in the speed.

You can get by with 512 of RAM, a bit more would be better. I do have a work around. First, RIGHT click on the Start button and choose Properties. A block will appear saying Start Menu, choose Classic Start Menu, hit Apply, then OK, uses less resources, won't be as pretty as the XP play mobile look. If the old look bugs you, you can change it back. Secondly, click on Start, and RIGHT click on My Computer, choose Properties. A block called System Properties will appear, choose the Advanced Tab. Under Performance, click on Settings and choose Adjust for Best Performance, hit Apply, then OK. While your still at this tab, you can change your Page File. Next to the Visual Effects tab, is Advanced, click on that. You will see Virtual Memory near the bottom, and click on the Change button. Now you can type in your own custom size, try 1152 for the minimum and maxi um size, and click OK. You might have to restart the computer. Best of luck, Chow.

As far as I know, the only way to stop page file usage is to add more RAM. If you are using XP, a full gig is starting to become the standard. Vista will require a recommended TWO GIG.

The only way to reduce page file usage is to add more memory. The page file is a section of hard disk used as conventional memory. If Windows is running out of available memory it will use the page file to keep running but obviously hard disks are much slower than memory. You will need to increase the size of physical RAM but it is not recommended to configure page file size in Windows yourself. XP has good PF management and will increase and decrease this as required. If you change it yourself and you run out of page file space and memory your machine will not boot up.

You're best to leave it alone and let Windows manage it, unless you need to move it to a different drive.
