<>It is a matter of what you prefer and can work with. I used a 14" monitor for years and it seemed fine to me. As for speakers, you can always get a better set and plug them into the computer.

I think most people would agree that it really depends on your personal preference and primary use for the machine as to what constitutes "too small" or "just right" for laptop screen size. I have a 14" HP Pavilion machine and I've found it to be very reliable, well-built and attractively designed. A friend had a nearly-identical machine in the 15.4" size and it was considerably heavier and more awkward to handle. Keep in mind, though, we are both female and were using the machines in situations where portability was a bigger factor, so this may not be of much importance to you. If you're using your machine as a desktop replacement, perhaps a bigger screen is the better option. Keep in mind that you can also connect a laptop to an external monitor/TV, mouse and keyboard if you find you really need more screen real estate than a smaller option provides.
To give you an idea, as a graphic design professional, I find it awkward to work on my laptop as I tend to use programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator which have a lot of palettes which take up a large amount of the screen, so my desktop setup includes two side-by-side 19" monitors. I use one monitor for viewing the document on which I'm working and the other to dock my palettes so I can see everything without having to move or hide the palettes to see more of my actual document.
Try to think about what sorts of programs you'll most often be using and whether size/weight/portability are significant factors for your uses of the machine and that should lead you in the right direction. Good luck!

It is very small But It s good laptop The new Alienware M11x is the latest gaming laptop from Dell's Alienware team and might be the best thing to happen to PC gaming this year. This impressive little box is the first ultraportable gaming notebook with an 11-inch screen and a weight of less than five pounds. If that's not enough to get you interested, you might like to know that it costs $799 ... almost the same price as less-powerful 11-inch notebooks with the newest Intel low-voltage processors.

It depends what you are going to be using the laptop for.
If you are a graphic designer or do technical drawings, you'll want the largest screen you get get your hands on. Similarly, if you visually impaired a larger screen is going to be helpful.
If you only want to view your email and surf the web then 14 inch screen will be fine.
The fact that it is a core duo processor and has 1Gb of RAM outweighs the smaller screen size in my opinion.
Check to see if the laptop has any external monitor slots on it or has the ability to plug in a docking station. You may then be able to plug an external monitor/flatscreen in should you feel the need for a larger screen at a later date.

A 14" is okay. I own an HP and I am fine with it. Seems like you don't mind a heavy laptop so a 17" must be fine for you.
I haven't used a Gateway yet so I can't tell from experience if its good.

My old iBook has a 12 inch screen and that was ideal, it was really small and portable. My current MacBook has a 13 inch wide-screen and I find that to be fine. If anything, I think a smaller screen would be better as I carry it about with me a lot.
I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you're just using it in one place then a larger screen might be a better choice, but if you're going to be carring it about etc. then you may find that you value a smaller screen (and weight) laptop.
Good luck with your purchase.

Yeah, I like my laptops small, I woudn;t want to take a 17" laptop to school, its too heavy, and you said you wanted to take it outside of your home, well i don't see why buy a laptop if you are not going to take it out of your house, what you are doing is good, you should also get a data subcripstion with cingular so you can browse the internet anywhere there is cellphone signal :)

If you're not taking it outside, why go for a laptop? A desktop setup would give you better performance for the same price, or the same performance for a cheaper price.
All laptops sacrifice something to acheive portability.
Hope this helps.
