we are upgrading our main p.c from a pentium 4 to a intel core duo 2.6ghz,1gb ram,300gb hdd, radeon x1950xt pci-e(512mb) so i am using the pentium 4 which its replacing as my second computer
currently the second p.c is a amd athlon 3200+,1gb ram,2 x 80gb hdd,geforce 6600gt,,and the pentium 4 specs are pentium 4 ht (3.2ghz),1gb ddr ram,120gb hdd,radeon 9200 a.g.p
my question is ...is the pentium 4 better than the athlon, bare in mind i will replace the old radeon 9220 with the nvidia 6600gt and up the memory to 1.5gb ddr ram,and also throw one of the 80gb hard drives to add to the 120gb hdd,so with all that added will this be a better all round p.c than the athlon as it was before
i shall be using it for gaming, internet and general p.c duties(photo editing, dvd veiwing ect)
also could i use the athlon as a gateway p.c for security,to act as a first line of defence before it reaches the pentium 4
cheers guys!

I would like to erase everything from my hard drive, except Windows XP. The computer was store-bought and was a gift, so I don't think it came with an XP CD.

Please help?

Thanks =)

Okay well i'm working on my buddy's computer, and it was working fine, then I just mounted the HDDs (2 of them) and then it wouldn't post, gave me 1 long beep. I remounted the ram, and nothing, then i pulled out one ram stick, it powered up just fine, but then that was with 512mb ram instead of a gig. So i shut er down, added the other stick into the 3rd ram slot, thinking it could be the controller that was damaged.

Tried again, it gets power, after about 4 seconds, unit shuts off, so i flip the switch at the back, discharge the capacitors, ground myself, pull out that stick, and try again. Now the Mobo LED doesn't turn on but all the drives and th fan get power. All i hear is a bunch of clicking sounds like from one of the HDDs... could this be power supply? I did pccheck on the second stick of ram, and found it to be a bad module... definitely could have fried his motherboard eh? Well let me know what you guys think.

I now have pretty much 3 options:
1. Replace the hard drive.
2. Convert to using my Mac Mini. It already has XP installed.
3. Buy a new computer?

What should I do? The person that can give the most compelling reason to do something will get the best answer.

I am so tired of microsoft releasing a new operating system every two years, and still not delivering the kind of performance you would expect.

I'm an intermediate when it comes to computers. I'm not scared to use them. Not scared to tweak settings, install hardware, or build a new system from scratch. Contrary to popular sentiment, I enjoyed Win 3.1, and even Win '98, but when I got Win XP on my laptop and tried to run some older (and very useful) software, I couldn't.

Now comes Windows Vista, and everything I've heard is mostly bad. Not only is Vista not compatible with ANY software that is pre-Win XP, but now I hear it won't even run a lot of software designed for Windows XP!

I'm fed up. I refuse to buy a new computer every two years, or a new OS every two years. I've been seriously thinking about switching over to Mac's because of their reputation for simplicity, ease of use and stability.

I want a rock-solid OS that will last for years to come. What do you recommend?

As a gift a friend of mine gave me a bunch of music burned on CD-R's but I cannot access it with my computer running Windows XP. If I remember correctly, he uses an Apple computer and I suspect this has something to do with my woes. Also, I know much of the music he gave me is also on his iPod, so I'm not certain what format the files are in. My computer won't even acknowledge the discs as containing any data whatsoever, it seems, and I've not dealt with an issue like this before. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

I have a business "work horse" computer with 4Gigabytes of RAM and a terabyte of hard disk, and plenty of gigahz. speed.

My question is: I'm wanting to buy a personal computer(desk top) for my personal use, but don't want to spend the money I did for the business computer.

Here is what I will use the desk top for:

Mostly internet surfing, internet banking, internet buying, etc.
I'm not a "gamer", so I will not be playing any PC games.
I do a lot of video and audio downloading, but not much editing, etc.
I don't use word-processing much. Just occasional simple letters.
Don't need fancy 3-D or anything like that.

So can anyone tell me what kind of system I should buy? In terms of amount of RAM, Hard disk space, Gigahz.speed, graphics card, etc.

I like to economize, but don't want a "junk" either.

Also what brand. My business computer is Dell and I love it

Thanks for any help with this.

I recently put together a computer. I uses an Elite Group motherboard, (1066 FSB)PC 2700 DDR ram, an Intel Celeron D Processor with a speed of 3.46 GH that needs only a 533 FSB. My operating system is Windows VIsta 32 bit home premium.
I have overclocking disabled in my bios, and have all the fail safe defaults enabled.
I had to exchange the processor because it blew after three weeks. My old processor was an integrated Amd Athlon 64 that ran at 2.16 GH and I never had a problem of this magnitude with it.
So why would an Intel blow out like that?

one of my relatives has a Gateway Profile 3 computer that he is trying to put some additional memory in.

http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/Profile/Profile3/8508183/8508183.htm

He got one 512MB PC133 SDRAM but it is only showing 256MB available. he can live without the other 256MB if there is a hardware limitation of only 256MB per slot. The main thing, though, is he gets a warning/error when he boots about the system memory running at 100MHz and the physical ram being 133MHz (I don't have the exact error text). The computer still boots and works ok, but this is a keyboard response that needs taken every time he boots.

Does anyone know how we can remove this message, since from the specs and support at Gateway we should be able to use PC133 in the computer?

Gateway support hasn't been much help.

I think it is AMI Bios version 2.01a

The speakers on my desktop always are making a slight static/rumbling noise when on even if they are turned all the way down.
They sound ok when playing sound thru them but when there is no sound playing they still have that background noise. if I have them on but I am not playing anything thru them the background noise is the same no matter how loud I turn up the volume.
It seems to do it with all speakrs I hook up to the pc.

I have a dell xps 200 that's running xp media edition. I had to get the Windows reinstallation DVD from Dell b/c they do that whole OEM/bundled-softwar thing. Anyway, they sent me an XP Pro reinstallation DVD. Well, when I try to use it I get a blue screen saying that it can't continue b/c SCSI devices haven't been properly terminated. I've been googling for hours and can't find an answer. Please help.

I am planning on buying my first computer soon.
Right now, I have a computer that was made in 95 and had Windows 98 on it and it has Microsoft works. I never upgraded it so it is REALLY slow.
My husband uses the computer to listen to music and watch stuff on you tube. I just want one that will have Word and Excel.
Where is the best place to buy a computer? Will we need to buy a new cable modem?
Oh and we don’t want to send more the $1000.

The computer we have now what a gift when I was in high school so I never bought one.
