Personally I wouldn't buy from Dell as there a monopolizing company and if you go on their website and its says computer for only £400 - (this doesn't include, the essentials like speakers, a monitor, even a floppy disk drive) - If you want the best value for money and can completely customize it to your personal spec then build one yourself, obviously if you don't know how then I'm sure you'll know a friend who can. Its not actually that hard! If your only using it for Microsoft office and Internet browsing then you do NOT need a high spec computer with the latest core duo processor, don't be sold into buying this expensive hardware when you only need it if your playing the top of the range games, video editing, rendering applications etc! Consider buying a laptop possibly, can get them for around £300 ($600). Also buy a computer online as its a lot cheaper than a shop, just try and get a warranty on your products (usually only for hardware) so consider virus/firewall protection (I use panda, is excellent and costs just £5 ($10). Also the new windows vista is not worth it at the minute as old software won't work properly with it, depends on your needs though!
As in one of the comments above you do not need a core duo proccessor!

If you don't play a lot of games look in the Sunday papers you should be able to find one on sale for around $500. If you are using cable broadband they will supply you with a modem. As far as word and excel you will have to buy them or use the free openoffice.org suite which is almost the same thing.

the best and least expensive would be at dell.com. You'll get what you need and not the pressure of dealing with a store. If you want higher speed internet then call your cable company to install a cable modem.

get an imac -- the cheapest starts at only 999 and its already intel core 2 duo! the new imacs can now be dual booted for windows xp installation, so u can use both the MAC OS and the windows xp.
Macs are more stable compared to other pcs and its well worth the buy.

if you just want something that runs those two programs, you shouldn't need to spend any more than 300 bucks. use your old monitor, keyboard, mouse, and software.
