There are several ways to do this. If perchance you have a media card reader(unlikely) you can use an SD card or another portable media card. If you have a thumb drive (also known as flash drive or pen drive) you can put files onto that the downside to that would be the fact that most thumb drives cannot hold a lot of data. If you have an iPod or MP3 player you can use it as an external hard drive or thumb drive. Simply drag the files into your iPod or MP3 player by going into My Computer clicking on the file with the name of your MP3 player or iPod and dragging the files in there. You can also run another hard drive as a slave and put the files into it. Or you can run your hard drive as a slave on the computer in which you want to transfer the files.

There are a number of options depending on the total size of the files you want to backup.

A free solution is to email them to yourself and keep a copy on the server. This is only really workable if you have small file sizes. You could also use Yahoo! Briefcase to store files online. I only recommend this if they have a high-speed internet connection.

You can also pick up a USB Flash Drive and use that as a backup but you're limited from 1GB (the cheapest) to 8GB (the most expensive).

Another option is to purchase an external hard drive or external CD Burner.

Personally, I think I would simply replace the dying CD Burner and use the new one to do a backup. They are really cheap now ($20-$30)

I would say an external hard drive or pen drive would be the simplest and fastest way. They are just plug and play for the most part. If he is still on Windows 98 most devices have driver downloads that you can get. Also, these devices will be reusable on the new computer or your own. Cost will depend on the amount of stuff you need to back up. A 1GB pen drive will usually be on sale somewhere for $20 all the way up to 500GB hard drives for $200. Many in between to choose from.

Use cross over cable to form network in to any other computer. Backup on the other computer hard drive or DVD burner. Microsoft file transfer wizard will be a good choice.

Get another harddrive and install it as a Slave (You'll have to change the jumper settings on the back) then copy all the files to the new HD.
Most computer have 2 or more slots for additional HD installations...Mine is 5 years old and has 2. So if it's anywhere near new it should accommodate that easily...it's not hard to do...very easy.
As a matter of a fact I bought my second HD at a yardsale for $1 ....40gbs.

Do you have another computer? You can network it and transfer all your files to that computer.

Flash disk is also good storage but up to 2Gig only, its becoming cheap nowadays.

The best way is to buy another hard disk, you can back up your files at greater amount (40Gig at least). In this way you will have a new hard drive.

By the way, do you have an email such as in yahoo. You can use the briefcase their to store your files but limited only.

Get a 2GB USB flash drive. If it isn't big enough to hold everything, copy as much as you can, transfer that to the other machine then clear the drive and do it again with the rest. If a CD is large enough to hold all his data, a 1GB flash drive will be plenty of space.

you may take out the hard drive and positioned it in the operating computer and move from there. or you should use an information superhighway storage website to upload some information and retrieve them with the operating computer
