The hard disk cable is not twisted because it uses a jumper settings to indicate whether it is set to master or slave.

Floppy drives dont have jumpers so its cables were twisted, that way the motherboard will recognize that it has two active floppy drives, and then labeled it as drive a: and drive b:.

This has to do with the way in wich the pin are used when connected to the MB. On the hard disk it is a straight pin to pin line up. on the floppy's the drive A will have a twist and if you had a 2nd floppy it would be straight.

It is a holdover for older system setups that had multiple floppy's.

Floppies are very old technology. The twist is used to allow the floppy to communicate with the motherboard.

One device "listens" while the other "talks".

The Tx (Transmit) pin on the motherboard is connected to the Rx (Receive) pin on the floppy via the twist. The Tx (Transmit) pin on the floppy is connected to the Rx (Receive) pin on the MoBo via the twist.

Hard drives do the same thing inside the controller, so they don't need the twist.
