Depends what you mean by "erase".
If you really want to wipe everything out, so that there's no trace of it (magnetically speaking) you'll need a disk wiper program that repeatedly overwrites every sector on the disk.
If you just want to remove the directory information so you can start over as if it was empty, a simple reformat will suffice.

Format the system, if your going to be getting rid of the computer use the hard drive utilities and write 0's to the drive, be aware though there are utilities that can recover information from a drive if you just format the drive. Not a 100% sure if you can recover something from the drive if it's had 0's written to it though. Someone free to answer that one..

Double Click "My Computer" Right click on the Hard you wanna erase info off, in Drop down menu choose "Format" and press "Start"l.. Have fun... But remember that it will be Really... really hard to return Information you will loose

Put a HUGE magnet up to it. It will erase eveything.

I usually use a boot disk, or bootable CD, and run format.
Keep in mind that if you have illegal sh*t on your computer, that they can recover it, even if you format
