I built a computer with a 60gb hard drive, 1.6ghz Pentium 4 processor (with Hyperthreading, but I have know idea how to enable it in Windows), and 768mb RAM (2 small, slow 128mb sticks and one 512mb PC3200 stick). My video card is a Radeon 9550 256mb card. My video card use to be in an old eMachines computer whose specs weren't as good as my current computer, and games played smoother on the old one than they do on the new one. The main game I play is MVP Baseball, and it's very annoying when in mid-pitch, the graphics start studder-stepping. It will run smooth for about 15-20 seconds, but then will be choppy until I pause the game. After I resume, for some reason, it's back to normal. (It is an 8X AGP port) Is the video card the problem, even though the game use to run fine on an eMachines with a AMD 1300+ Athlon processor and 384mb of RAM? Thanks

I recently acquired a Dell with no hard drive so I decided to remove the hard drive from an old Packard Bell PC and installed it in the Dell. When I came to boot the Dell, I got a blue screen with the following error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
----------

I've restarted the computer several times but still end up with the same error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Remember that I'm not a PC user so imagine you're writing one of those dummy books. Thanks.

More info, I cam back from a trip and my pc power LED on the back of my Compaq that is usually solid green when I have power, was flashing green. I talked to the support guy but he was useless. He said its either my motherboard, processor, or power supply.

Would it be easier to just get a barebones kit that comes with a new motherboard, processor, and power supply and just transfer my h.d., dvd-rom, cd-rom, floopy, etc. hardware components over to the barebones or would it just be easier to get a new PC.

I found some sweet deals on barebone kits but not sure if I should go with AMD or and Intel processor?

If anyone can give advice about this issue it would be a great help just want to get my main pc in the house back up and running again.

Cheers

I have just bought an I/OMagic USB EXTERNAL CD/RW and when I hit the EJECT BUTTON the door will open, but it closes so fast I cannot insert a disk. IT IS installed correctly, Windows picks it up OK, it is listed in My Computer with the correct ICON. I have also went to Properties and used the troubleshooter and it states that the devise is working PROPERLY. It is also listed in my Devise Manager. I have uninstalled it 3 times and reinstalled it and I get the same problem. I have an up to date driver with it also. It will READ a Data and IMAGE Disk that I made awhile back with no problem. It will also NOT PLAY an AUDIO CD. I have set it to Analog instead of Digital and that does not help. Any help out there?????????? (I have to hold the door open for a second by hand so I can put a disk in)

The CD-ROM drive icon never appears under My Computer or Windows Explorer. It was working a few days ago, and I could both read and burn CDs. We noticed that the CD-ROM icon disappeared 2 days back. Popping in a CD etc does not help. The drivers seem ok, and Control Panel -> System -> Drivers and Disk Drive (Samsung) indicated status as ok. But the drive itself is not recognized and CD's inserted into it cannot be read.

I have Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1)

My problem is I can not change the background! I have had this problem before and can't remember how to fix it. Please don't tell me to right click on desktop and then properties, ETC because I know how to change the background....it's just not letting me do something different then the blue screen it stays at.

When I am shutting down the computer I can see the background I selected for a breif moment. I have tried searching for information but nothing works. If someone could help me I would appreciate it.
